CHILDREN’S CONCERTS
The Santa Maria Philharmonic Society is proud to present annually our Children’s Concerts to all the fourth graders in the Santa Maria Valley. We currently host two concerts in November and two concerts in February, with a total attendance of approximately 2000 students. There is a tremendous amount of organization and coordination with the school systems, and a load of bus trips – but the kids love it and are very well behaved. We are very grateful to Pacific Christian Center for allowing us to use their spacious facilities. The children, as always, are transfixed as each instrument is demonstrated for them by principal musicians of the orchestra under the direction of Maestro John Farrer. The full concert presentation of Peter and the Wolf composed by Sergei Prokofiev keeps the students riveted to their seats throughout the program. |

THE MUSIC VAN
The Music Van arrives in late April of each year and travels to all of the elementary schools in the Santa Maria Valley giving a short presentation to the third grade classrooms. We work with small groups of 10 to 15 students and give them all an opportunity to discover the various instruments of the orchestra and actually perform on them. This is a highlight of their experience.
The van is donated by Toyota-Scion of Santa Maria for the nine-weeks of the program’s operation. The Santa Maria Philharmonic Society rents the music instruments from the Santa Barbara Symphony Children’s Program. |
